Methodologies in Morphology

Eligible Subject: ‘Methodologies in Morphology’

Annotation:

This subject is intended to train candidate students in small teams interested in pursuing extracurricular research activity in the field of morphology. In addition, the students can utilize this intensive course as a port into future research opportunities.

Candidates will be selected based on the following selection factors:

  • Availability of suitable project.
  • Academic background and goals orientation.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Familiarity with research objectives.
  • Enthusiastic attitude towards exploration and problem solving.
  • Willing to dedicate time and put in effort.

Enrolled students are expected to be willing to spend minimally 2 hours a week of work.

 

Aim of the course

The aim of this subject is to provide opportunity for students to enhance their knowledge outside the scope of the traditional in-class learning by gaining practical skills and approach into solving problems.

 

Credits requirements: (2 semesters course - 3 credits)

  1. Prior approval from the project principal.
  2. Literature survey - evaluated as sufficient by the tutor.
  3. Data acquisition - evaluated as project contribution.
  4. Active conference participation - 2LF Scientific conference or an approved local conference.

 

Syllabus

The organization of the course is as following:

  1. Candidates need to first arrange topic proposal with the head of the designated project.
  2. Upon selection and approval, students will be assigned into teams.
  3. Students will learn how to use the searching tools and navigate through the literature.
  4. Students will take part in literature surveys.
  5. Students will undergo basic relevant methodology and laboratory training:
    1. Dry bones morphometry.
    2. Gross anatomy dissection skills.
    3. Microscopy in basic morphology.
    4. Data acquisition.
    5. Biostatistics and meta-analysis.
  6. Students will carry on the task of data collection and analysis under supervision.
  7. Submitting and presenting the research work in a form of a poster presentation in a scientific conference.
